Haights Cross was formed in 1997 and capitalized with investments by Media/Communications Partners III Limited Partnership ("M/C III") and a related fund, and by Peter J. Quandt, its chief executive officer. M/C III is a private equity fund that is managed by Media/Communications Partners, a Boston-based private equity firm. The principals of Media/Communications Partners who led the Haights Cross investment, Christopher S. Gaffney and Steven F. Gormley, joined the board of Haights Cross in connection with the investment and have served on the board ever since.
In 1998, Messrs. Gaffney and Gormley, among others, left Media/Communications Partners to form a new private equity firm, Great Hill Partners, LLC. However, Messrs. Gaffney and Gormley, who now principally serve as partners of Great Hill Partners, retained their status as managing partners of the M/C III fund and, in particular, the primary managers of the Haights Cross investment. Thus, while the principal investor in Haights Cross is M/C III, the persons who exercise the rights of M/C III and make investment decisions as they relate to the Haights Cross investment are Messrs. Gaffney and Gormley.
Great Hill Partners is a Boston-based investment firm that provides equity financing and strategy for ventures in media, telecommunications, and business services. Specific areas of focus for the firm's $800+ million investments include publishing, information, broadcasting, wireless telecommunications, cable television, and security monitoring.
Christopher S. Gaffney is the Managing Partner working with Haights Cross.
