Prince Frederick, MD, October 29, 2009—Recorded Books, LLC, the world's largest independent publisher of unabridged audiobooks, and a Haights Cross Communications company, has partnered with Transparent Language, a leading provider of best-practice language learning software, to introduce Transparent Language Library Edition, a new language-learning software program specifically designed to circulate outside of public libraries. The new program is currently available for purchase by libraries in 16 languages.
Recorded Books’ Transparent Language Library Edition software is the first software designed to circulate outside of a public library. The software is loaded on a USB drive with microchip security. The microchip acts as a key that allows patrons to check out, install, and use the software on their home computer.
“Copyright protection has always been an issue with computer software in libraries. Lending software that comes on a disk is problematic. The software can be easily copied from one computer to another, essentially violating the copyright of the software publisher,” says Jim Schmidt, Vice President of Business Development for Recorded Books. “Our new media technology guarantees copyright protection. A patron can install a full working copy of the software on their computer that tracks and records their progress through the program. However, the program can only be used if the patron checks out the key from the library,” Schmidt explains.
Transparent Language Library Edition’s main program screen is modeled after a book for simplicity and a fun, interactive experience. The book interface provides easy-to-follow chapters and pages for lessons to help users find their way around the program. Learning methods include a flashcard vocabulary builder, audio lessons, speech recognition analysis, and interactive video dialogs to create an immersive language-learning environment.
